DC 47 Members Testified About Libraries at Budget Hearing

Tim Horras is a member of Local 2187. He testified that his library branch in Kensington was closed for a few weeks due to a mosquito infestation. Tim said they also lack the proper amount of materials needed at his library and others, and that materials in the libraries are below the state mandated levels. He said  an appropriation of $7.1 million is needed to just meet the mandated materials needed in Philly libraries. Tim and other members of the union are calling on City Council members to provide more funding for the public libraries.

Local 2187 members Alexis Ahiagabe and Mary Marques joined Tim at the table, also testifying in City Council.

DC 47 Pres. Fred Wright reacts to Mayor Kenny’s Budget Message About Libraries

“Our members … they are asking specifically for $15 million more for the library system. That’s for staff, supplies and the general upkeep of the libraries.”
“I am not completely satisfied with what the Mayor has said. I’m happy to hear he is going to put more money into the library system, but the proof is in the pudding. I need to see exactly how much more the City Council is going to approve for the libraries.” – DC 47 Pres. Fred Wright
